Most of us have read the grim statistics on growing inequality in American society. As the old song says “the rich get rich and the poor get poorer.” Meanwhile, the middle class continues to erode. However, before we can effectively address these societal issues we need to examine our own attitudes towards inequality. What messages about class status did we receive as kids? How to we view ourselves in relation to the very rich (the one percenters) and the poor? Do we even have adequate language to talk about these issues? Also, how do class biases affect our own religious movement? Do they creep in in ways that we are not aware of that may limit the people we can reach?
